80 Years of Discovery:

Honouring Our Past, Advancing Our Future

In 2026, the New Zealand Institute of Medical Laboratory Science marks an extraordinary milestone — 80 years of the medical laboratory science profession in Aotearoa, New Zealand. This anniversary provides a powerful opportunity to reflect on the scientific breakthroughs, technological advancements, and professional leadership that have shaped the discipline since its inception.

Over eight decades, medical laboratory science has evolved from manual methodologies and foundational diagnostic techniques to highly sophisticated, automated, and molecular-driven practices. The profession has consistently adapted to emerging health challenges — from infectious disease outbreaks to the rapid advancement of genomics, personalised medicine, digital pathology, and point-of-care innovation. Each era has been defined by discovery, resilience, and a commitment to improving patient outcomes.

80 Years of Discovery is both a celebration and a call to action — recognising the legacy of excellence within New Zealand medical laboratory science while setting a confident, forward-looking direction for the decades ahead.

Honouring Our Past acknowledges the pioneers, educators, researchers, and practitioners who established the standards, systems, and scientific rigour that underpin modern laboratory medicine in New Zealand. It recognises the development of training pathways, quality frameworks, accreditation standards, and the collaborative culture that continues to define our profession.

Advancing Our Future looks forward to the next generation of laboratory professionals and the transformative technologies reshaping healthcare. Artificial intelligence, precision diagnostics, automation, data integration, workforce sustainability, equity in healthcare delivery, and Pacific and Māori health advancement will all play a role in the future landscape of laboratory science. As healthcare systems evolve, so too must our profession — embracing innovation while maintaining the highest standards of quality and patient safety.
